Walt, as you know, by wartime the monument had crumbled a good bit, so the sig sta was an improvised platform at a lower height than the present, rebuilt (and heightened) monument. That adds to the considerations Pete and Ray have noted.

By the way--question has been raised by researcher on the TalkAntietam site about which of two churches in Middletown served as the Fed sig sta. Recent posting based on a postal card inscription indicates that it was NOT the Lutheran church, but Christ Reformed church. (If you hold info to the contrary,we should post.)
