Subject: RE: Women in the Signal Corps...
While I am not aware of specific women who moved along with the advancing armies, there are instances of women working in or near garrison settings.
One such individual was Page Borden, who was contracted as a, "Helper," in the Chattanooga area by the Signal Corps. Her initial date of contract service was March, 21, 1864 and extended into early 1865. Her husband, 1st Lt. Byron J. Borden, was an officer in the 1st Michigan Engineers Regiment, who was stationed in and around Chattanooga for most of 1864 as well.
While I have no information as to her actual duties, I can send you a scan showing her being listed by 2nd Lt. A.K. Taylor on a report directed to Captain Carlisle,A.Q.M.. Taylor was the A.A.Q.M. for the Army of the Cumberland, Signal Detachment.
