Subject: RE: Loose or Sloppy Joint Ferules
As time and torsion takes it's toll, I have further cheated and drilled a small hole into the brass and used number 8 1/2 inch brass screws that are threaded machine screw style up to the head to further clinch the brass to the staff.|
To cheat further, a very good grade of epoxy that sets up in about 30 minutes normally used for things like bonding steel mixed from two parts to set the brass to the staff it is normally affixed to has been used on our sets. This should not be the paste version as it will not fill the voids. Drill small holes about 1/8 inch deep into the staff under where the brass would fit. This will allow the epoxy to grip better than over smooth hickory.
Also, wrapped and soldered brass wire on the ends of the ferrules to slow expansion.
These things tried over the past few years with good effect.
I still have to post the photos of our sets up close. Got the photos but just short of the time. Not retired here. I own a business and also work full time doing engineering for another firm.
