Subject: RE: A Flag Size Question - Puzzled

Message Detail:
Chuck,
Ms Joiner's flags are accurate and the results of RESEARCH, not guess-work. My wife made all of my flags
in the 1980's. Based on the information available at the time, we made a common mistake and used 48-inch material. Well, looms in the 1860's did not produce cloth in that width, as we discovered after inspecting ORIGINAL 4-foot flags of the period, which all had a center seam. (Three strips were used to create the 6-foot flags.) Also, the center square was applied to one side, then the opposite side was cut away to reveal the square, with the edge then tucked and hemmed. Consequently, I tore apart my "farb" flags and my wife re-sewed them. (The "Signal-Cipher" published an article on making accurate reproduction flags some years ago.) She even sewed a Union signal "honors" flag for me -- that's the one with a star instead of a square. Although I had to paint the battle honors onto it.
