Subject: This year at the CREEK
This year Cedar Creek was a MUCH better experience for this Signalist.
We were USED by Command, and our opinions were SOUGHT OUT by Commanders.
We were used to help control the scenerio as far as Infantry was concerned but also a newer twist.
That was Artillery command.
On Saturday we had to relay orders from the Artillery commander who was near the Sutlers and Spectators with a line of guns through the tree-line back to Belle grove Plantation where the rest of the Confederate guns were placed. No direct line of site existed so we set up a relay station at the tree-line. We effectively sent firing orders over the space of 1.5 miles through and over obsticals. (treelines, and the canvas city of the Confederate camp) very effectively.
The Artillery Commanders were VERY pleased with our efforts and started thinking about how they could deploy their guns in the future with the use of signals rather than massing them together for communication's sake.
Not just the 'on-field' experiences either. The event weather was just PERFECT!
Signals were used - our opinions were sought out - and the weather, sutlers, and water/wood/portapots were all fantastic.
This year's Cedar Creek was EXCELLENT!
