Subject: RE: Clothesline Signalling Goes Aloft

Message Detail:
RAY, IN ADDITION TO ALEXANDER'S DELIGHTFUL "MEMOIRS" AND THE NICE JOB GARY GALLAGHER DID FOR HIS REAL MEMOIRS ("FIGHTING FOR THE CONFEDERACY"), ADD KLEIN'S BIO OF EPA TO YOUR READING LIST. THIS LATTER BRINGS IN SOME INFO FM EPA'S LETTERS TO HIS WIFE AND GIVES A DIFFERENT SLANT ON THINGS. EPA DESCRIBED HIS FIRST TRAINEES AS SHARP, QUICK STUDIES AND SUPPORTED THEIR COMMISSIONS, BUT TO HIS WIFE, IN CONFIDENCE, SAID THEY WERE SO SLOW AND STUPID THAT HE HAD TO JUMP UP AND DOWN TO POUND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL INTO THEIR HEADS. (I LIKED THAT--PUBLIC PRAISE, BUT VENTING HIS SPLEEN IN CONFIDENCE. PROTECTING "HIS MEN" BUT DISCIPLINING THEM "BACK HOME.") HE HAD A GENUINE SENSE OF HUMOR AND HAD HIGH STANDARDS OF EXPECTATION, FOR HIMSELF AND OTHERS. I TOO WOULD HAVE BEEN RELUCTANT TO CROSS FLAGS (OR SWORDS, SINCE HE WAS A FENCING INSTRUCTOR AT THE POINT) WITH HIM. BY CONTRAST, I WONDER IF MYER EVER INDULGED IN A PRANK OR A GOOD JOKE.
