Message Detail:
In re the Waud mosaic, perhaps I should have commented on some of the other images: the officer atop a limber, with flagman on the ground, guard (with bayonet at his side), and an arty battery alongside, as inf move forward; a galloping flagman following an officer past skirmishers in front of line of battle; several sketches of signal observers at work. These and other images in Waud's sketch suggest to me that to portray a Civil War battle without signal flags represented in some capacity risks being inaccurate and misleading the audience. Mark, should we not expect the scenario honcho under such circumstances to explain why he did NOT have signals present?
