Chris,

Your phrase that signals "certainly add a huge educational value to any event, provided they do not detract from the overall goals." shows me that the Fosterian school of signalling lives on from the days of the old Archer's Brigade.

'Ol George Heffner's CSO used to say that when the scale or scenario reached a point where it did not lend itself to signalling (Crystal Ball working here), measures needs must be taken to have the signal detachment fight 'in support' of the infantry. Yes I remember it well.

Can you enlighten me as to how functional signal operations might "detract from the overall goals." of an event's general staff functions?
