Tom, Coldwell (with an O) is the correct spelling for the CSMT man. In the chapter from Ralph Weber's "Masked Dispatches," as excerpted on this site under Telegraph, I recount the story of Grant's mix up over ownership of the USMT "cipher," which got the future Gen-in-chief in hot water with Stanton, and how Grant got his wrist slapped for interference. The absence of Meade's assigned cipher-op/telegrapher, Caldwell (with an A), virtually mirrors Grant's situation. This was the down-side to Stanton's tight control over the crypto and tel ops, giving no flexibility for the man in the field as he tried to literally micro-manage.
