You have all the colors and sizes correct. Myer came
up with these after months of experimenting in Texas prior to his selection as Signal Officer of the Army.
Here are my two-cents, based on my experience in the
field and researching original flags. The most used
color in any size was white. Extant white flags show
much more wear than black and red. When white is not
optimum, the COLOR red is discernible when using the
2 and 4 foot flags. With the greater distances, the
CONTRAST remains discernible, but color is less so.
Hence, the selection of black for the 6 foot flags
used for greater distances.
