Anthony, pending Walt's reply, let me respond that I've frequently encountered two (or three) officers--especially junior grade (lieutenants)--being assigned, especially during active campaigning, when "'round-the-clock" observation or supervision was required. Recently studying Union signal deployment during the battle of Antietam I was again struck by this fact, as can be noted in the reports in the Official Records. This may have made for some interesting arguments about seniority, but they seem to have managed--the first signal corps "battle flags" were awarded in multiple-officer situations.
