Subject: Ft. Huachuca

Message Detail:
Dave,
I visited the Ft. Huachuca Museum in October 1997 while I was there on active duty for a month. If I remember correctly, they have heliographs with a signalman in the uniform from the period. I spent most of my free time there pursuing another interest -- getting a memorial cross made to place at the site of the ruins of the old Spanish Presidio about 10 miles north of Ft. Huachuca. The presidio was there for only about five years (1770-1776) before it was abandoned due to the high casualty rates among the soldiers. BLM put up the cross in 1999. It lists three of the presidio's commanders who were killed along with the number of soldiers who died with them during three of the bigger fights. Several of Lisa's ancestors were soldiers at the nearby Tubac and Tucson presidios in the 1700's before they went on to California in 1769 and 1774.
