Subject: RE: Re.: Kennesaw Mtn Sig Sta Being Saved

Message Detail:
Chip, My curiosity got the better of me. If you'll look in Brown, pp. 527 and 529, you'll see ref to the CS sig sta on Kennesaw and to the "breaking" of the "new [flag] code" by the US sig officers, who passed a copy to brother sig officers as reciprocity for similar help earlier. (I suspect that this CS sta was under command of Sig LT Bellinger, Army of Tennessee, serving Wheeler.) US signalers used their cipher to preclude CS signalmen "doing unto them." On p. 529, account continues that the mil tel arrived, and the US sig people were withdrawn from their principal sta on Piney Mt. "On the night of July 2d, Kenesaw [sic] was evacuated, and on the morning of the 3rd, Capt. McClintock [Army of the Tennessee]occupied the signal station at that point, abandoned by the enemy... . He opened communications between Generals Sherman, Thomas, Schofield, McPherson, and Hooker." This is quite clear, it seems to me. Barring information to the contrary, perhaps at this early stage we could make a pitch to have the proposed marker acknowledge this "dual-use" by the contending signalmen. Aside from being accurate and "a nice touch," it could also broaden appeal--and contributions.
