Subject: RE: Pre-War Ballooning History

Message Detail:
Funny Mark but I was under the impression that the first manned flight of a balloon in America was conducted in Baltimore shortly after the first un-manned flight in America took place in Bladensburg, Maryland a mere 35 miles to the Southwest. This first launch site is called Balloon Garden to-day and sits upon the old Baltimore Pike just East of the Annicostia River.

As I bring this up I had also heard that flights had also occurred over Bladensburg on the Annicostia River during the 1861-63 period. Anyone have additional info to add to this?

Walt
