I wish to add my perverbial two bits if I may. The Dept. of the Tennessee, (that's me), outfits all my guys personally, taking into account that they are all young and most have no means of income, I have taken it upon myself to outfit them.
With that in mind, I have "issued" them 11 button shells, and the original guys have dark blue trousers. The new guys have sky blue foot trousers. When they reach the age of 16, they are allowed to outfit themselves with belts and sabers, with colt revolvers. One of my newer recruits has outfitted himself with an enlisted mans frock, with sky blue trousers. Headgear is another issue, I am attempting to get everyone to wear a kepi, or forage hat. But things as they are, they still wear slouch hats for now.
Rank is cav. issue, I figured since we were supposed to be mounted, that was more appropiate. Also, a substantial number of other signalists wear yellow, so why not.
Keep in mind, we also try to do confederate whenever possible, so that opens up another set of wardrobe problems. I try not to make the uniforms to "uniformed". But making them all, it is sometimes hard to hide the "style" of the tailor.
I hope this gives you some ideas, but as Walt says, it's a good thing to be us.
