Subject: Signal Corps Uniforms for Reenactors

Message Detail:
In an earlier thread we pretty much established that Federal SigC uniform was a relative term during the war. Now, I'd like to get a feel from the SigC reenacting community regarding recommendations on uniforms for signalmen doing a circa 1863 Army of the Potomac impression.

Beyond the obvious choice of sack coat, light blue foot trousers, and forage cap, what would be acceptable? Untrimmed 12 button mounted service jackets and trousers? Plain 9 button roundabout jacket? Would the authorized Signal Corps jacket have been available in 1863 (and does anyone make a reproduction of it today)?

NCO insignia - the 1864 regs specified yellow chevrons and trouser stripes, but what were they wearing in 1863? What do most SigC reenactors wear, yellow or blue?

How about weapons: sabers, pistols, and carbines perhaps? Any known documentation of what was issued to the troops?

Regards,

Ken
