Tks, Doug. Perhaps next time the spectators can be given a demo contrasting Civil War era Army and Navy signaling. I'm not sure how it might come out, for "canned" terms and sentences in the Navy code (telegraphic) book show the advantage of code, but the disadvantages of having to spell out words and phrases not anticipated; whereas the Army system would show the ability to "say anything," without the constraint of a code system (plus the ability to use "pre-concerted signals," as Myer might have said). The Connie crew might have one indiv who wld like to "bone up" on nautical signaling (including the shortcuts of Repeaters, etc.) and be their official Signalman. I've found only modest interest in nautical signaling for this period, but we might see a small sub-set of naval interest in visual signaling developing with SCARD.
