Subject: BALTIMORE EVENT A ROUSING SUCCESS
Just wanted to post a 'quickie' and let you know that the event this past weekend was a rousing success.
The weather cooperated for the most part and we were able to signal from the USS Constellation to the top of Federal Hill - about 2 miles (or so) away. The 4 foot flags were plainly visible to the naked eye and easily readable once the optimum color of flag was determined.
Although there was some severe winds on Sunday we were still able to communicate via flag.
At several points during both days during flagging the details that went to Federal Hill were stopped and asked what they were doing by various by-standers and they were always told and "Signal Corps" was explained. The same on the ship - except we had a captive audience. We took the time to explain what we were doing and even got one spectator involved who volunteered.
The Telegraphers set up between the welcome building (next to the ship on the pier) and the ship's gun deck. When somebody would come into the welcome center to tour the ship they'd ask if they had a telegraph to send. And it'd be waiting for them when they got to the gundeck!
On Sunday there was an Army fife and drum playing as well. That just rounded out everything that was done and really put the 'icing' on the cake!
"BIG" WELL DONE goes out to everybody that participated but especially to Walt Mathers for setting this whole thing up and facilitating all this 'signaling fun'.
There WERE pictures taken - and, in time, we'll get those posted.
