No, seriously. Your analysis well taken: the difference, apparently, between folks reading about how it was done and having experience in doing it the way it was done. The 40x 'scope aside, sounds as if they didn't know or have prearranged sigs to change flag color. (Assuming no electronic, walkie-talkie link.) Having at least one intermediate sta could have added to the scheme and possibly offset the direct glare problem. (Remembering, too, that the present-day Monument is higher that that of 1862, I blv.) Hope your source continues into INSCOM and recalls his experience.
