Message Detail:
Chip,
Once the guidelines are set, how do you enforce them?
The idea was raised in the ANV to have Authenticity folks roaming around on a "Courtesy Patrol" They actually wanted us to write out freaken tickets down at the sutlers!
My objection was that "OK we see an infraction next to the sutlers... We walk up and dress 'em down? What if they weren't ANV? Is it our business to enforce rules throughout the hobby?". Enforcement is the rub here. This is a hobby...you can set all the standards you want, but everyone volunteers for this. This isn't the real military...Folks obey officers orders in the hobby because they want to. But as soon as they don't want to, they pack their bags and go home. We want to be inclusive, not exclusive. So, guidelines are great as a list of suggestions. Who draws the authenticity lines. Do I get neailed because my button holes aren't hand sewn? Am I in trouble because I have a cooler neatly hidden? I mean they didn't have coolers then, neatly hidden or not. I tend to be more forgiving... If the person is trying then I'm pretty much fine. Flagrant stuff is easy due to peer pressure..."My Woman From
Tok-y-o" blaring from a CD player is definately a no-go. But I see commanding Generals of events smoking (Cigarettes are my Pet Peeve BTW) Marlboros... you gonna bitch him out?
