Subject: 31st NJ Infantry

Message Detail:
Hi all, love the site and discussions. My great great grandfather was, I believe, a member of the 31st NJ Infantry mustered at Flemington, NJ in Sept. 1862.
His name was J. Stephen Yard (first name was John but went by J. Stephen) and he survived the war and died in a freak wagon acccident in Flemington in 1900 (i found his obituary on microfilm at the library). The obit. made no mentiion of his Civil War service, but I had seen a John S. Yard listed as a member of the 31st on another website.

Question 1- Is there a list of all the men in the 31st with ages, etc and maybe even photos? Anyone ever seen a book like this? I am new to this stuff and don't know what all is out there re: these NJ units.

Question 2- Did the 31st see a lot of action at Chancellorsville? I see that the whole 31st lost no one to battle and 39 to disease.

Any info on the 31st is much, much appreciated, esp. any recommended books or materials. Thanks
