Subject: Post Civil War Medallion

Message Detail:
While tearing down an old chicken coop on a very old farm property in Somerset county, NJ, my cousin found an old brass medallion.

On the front is the state seal of New Jersey and the American flag a bough of leaves. Stamped into the brass on the back of the medallion, there are, what looks like, 2 very small acorns (facing cap to cap) above the number 31.

The medallion is about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. There are three holes at the top of the medallion. Each of them have a different diameter.

I believe it may be dated sometime after the Civil War and am curious whether this is the type of medallion that was distributed to veterans who may have belonged to an organization like the GAR.

Does anyone have any idea what this may be?

Thanks,

Harry
