Subject: GAR marker on GGGrandfather's grave

Message Detail:
My Great, Great grandfather was Henry D. Johnson. He is buried in a small private cemetery in South Thomaston, Maine. There is a rusting GAR marker at his grave. He was a sea captain who died in 1868, but we have never heard that he was involved in the CW in any capacity.

The question(s)are these: How can we find out if he WAS in the Union Navy? Could the marker have been placed in error?

Thanks for any help/leads.
