I think there are others on this site that could likely help you more than I can but I do have suggestion if you have to wing it on your own.

If you go to Google Books and search by books by
Maine Adjutant General I think you will find the 1866 supplement with almost a complete list of Maine men that served in the war.

If you go to FamilySearch.org (it's free but you likely will have to register)you can find:

(1) United States 1890 Census of Union Veterans and Widows of the Civil War.

(2)scans of the monthly regiment reports from the Maine State Archives.

Likely the easy way to start is another post on this site but what I suggested should work too.

Once you have someone identified I expect you will also need his records from the National Archives-I think they are up to $75.
