The Register of Enlistment pages on Ancestry are for regular US Army. John D Bickford enlisted 22 Sept '64 with Co E of the 17th US Infantry. The ME Adj't Report of 1864 (Vol 1 pg 1029) also confirms this. His residence, or the place to whom he was used to fill the quota, was Herman, Maine. As far as deserting goes, he probably didn't feel inclined to continue his service as the war was over. Looking at a monthly report from the 17th Inf, a LOT of soldiers were deserting.

I saw on the enlistment sheet that he was born in Cambridge, Maine. Have you seen the vital records from this town yet?
