Subject: missing soldier from the 17th

Message Detail:
I need some advice on finding more information on an ancestor. John D. Bickford enlisted September 22nd 1864 at Bangor, Maine for three years. Assigned to the 17th Regiment of Infantry. I have a Register of Enlistments that shows that John D. Beckford Deserted Aug 6th, 1865 from the 17th, Company E. I tried ordering his CMSR from the NARA. I only receivied the Register and his recuitment papers which I already had.

I'm confused. Why would John desert after the war ended? Wasn't the 17th transferred to the 1st Maine Hvy Artillery? Why can't I find him on any roster? Would the state of Maine have better records on him?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
