I'm coming late to this conversation. Sorry. I'm interested though.

I see from Marilyn Burgess' posts that it seems unlikely that the State will do much to celebrate. In better times I think they might be more likely to lend some support to a citizen effort. That said, however, they do have the info if one is willing to dig.
I like the idea of a Google docs group to organize and centralize info. I also like the idea of a website. Many of us already have websites (and that kind of expertise) that could perhaps host a monument site. History websites are increasingly more likely to disseminate info (seems to me anyway) than a book just because you can do a simple search and immediately turn up info you didn't know existed. You don't have to find, order or wait for a book's arrival
A book has it's plus side as well but costs a lot to produce and distribute. I suppose we could use Lulu or another online publisher for this form of output.

What I really like is the idea of supplementary info - who's who, buried where, town CW data, regiments/men connected to the monument town. A lot of this is already compiled in the late 19th century and some 20th century town histories. I betcha we could get the local historical societies to give us some input as well. This book/site could be an important compilation of info if we do it right.
