Subject: RE: Capt. Abiather J. Knowles |
|
That got me looking... I've linked below to his listing on "findagrave," which says: He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a Private in Company D, 2nd Maine Infantry for action on July 21, 1861, at Bull Run, Virginia. His citation reads "Removed the dead and wounded under heavy fire." More of the story can be found in "Maine in the War for the Union" (p. 42): Before the retreat, six of Colonel Jameson's men were lying wounded on the field where they had made a charge. The Colonel called for volunteers to go with him and bring them off. Six men -- Sergt. G. W. Brown of Company F, A. J. Knowles and Leonard Carver of Company D, A. P. Jones and Henry Wheeler of Company A, and Peter Welch of Company I -- stepped forward. They went up upon the run, led by the gallant Colonel into the grape and cannister from the enemy's batteries which were sweeping across the place, and brought back the wounded men. Unfortunately, his story isn't included in "Deeds of Valor," else we would have had it in his own words. |
