Subject: Canadian monuments to Medal of Honor recipients |
|
I have been researching Canada's involvement in the US military for a few years and have concentrated on those who received the Medal of Honor. My current numbers are at 80 and growing for Canadians or those with strong ties to Canada that earned the medal. In the US, there are bridges, and ships, and buildings and armouries and plaques and monuments etc etc etc all across the country recognizing the true heroism of the American heroes who earned their own Medals of Honor.(At least one such park and a building are named in honour of Canadians) In several years of research I can only find ONE such memorial in Canada, in northern Ontario to recognize a Canadian MOH recipient. This is truly sad. One of my recent articles, published in the Lindsay Ontario area brought the reader the attention of how Americans had gone so far out of their way to finally correct an erroneously spelt grave stone in Georgia for Dennis Buckley. The error lasted over 140 yrs, but a very impressive ceremony corrected the error on America's National Medal of Honor Day, last May 25th. My article asked the folks of Lindsay to now recognize..in Lindsay, the true heroism of Dennis Buckley, who gave his life for the cause. The townsfolk have now come together to volunteer to create a monument under the direction of the Victoria County Historical Society. It will be only the second in the entire country. I am in the process of starting a committee to do the same with a monument in Halifax to recognize one of their brave soles, who today, is only the fifth MOH recipient in the entire country to be buried here. As details come available, I will bring more news to this site. cheers from Victoria BC |
