I am attempting to put together a presentation about how the soldiers' communities were affected by the tragedy of the June 18, 1864 charge. I would also be interested in knowing what kind of commemorations the Bangor area has had to honor the soldiers in that Unit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, my great great Uncle, Albion Drinkwater fought for the 1st Maine Cav. He was from Topsham.

I JUST PURCHASED A LETTER, DATED OCT 5, 1861 FROM A S.W. SMITH, TO HIS PARENTS ALFRED SMITH, STEUBEN, MAINE. POSTMARKED, WASH DC HE WRITES OF CAMP LUIFE, MIDQUALITY OF FOOD AND CLOTHING AND THAT GENEARL HANCOCK HAD JUST ARRIVED TO SPEAK TO THE TROOOPS. A VERY HOMEY LETTER. IS THIS STILLMAN SMITH OF THE FIRST MAINE HEAVY ARTILLERY ? I NOTE THAT THIS STILLMAN DIED ROM WOUNDS AT PETERSBURG. IF IT ISN'T HIM CAN YOU IDENTIFY HIM? I AM HOPING TO COMPILE A BIO ON HIM FOR MY FILES.

Gershom Bibber is my great great uncle. I was wondering if you had a photo of him? My grandmother gave his sword many years ago. Her name was Grace Bibber-Carter of Charlotte ME.

We are looking for a photo of A Company, 1st Main Heavies. Also what does a red lozenge on a Kepi of this regiment signify? We have a Pvt. Edward C. Osborn's uniform and we are looking for a photo of him to exhibit with it at our museum.
